GAMSAT sample questions

Seven GAMSAT-style sample questions written by the Gamsat Prep team, covering argument analysis, poetry, data interpretation, Section II essay planning, chemistry, biology and physics. Each one includes the correct answer, why each distractor fails, and the named reasoning trap that catches most candidates on that item — because the trap is what generalises to the next question, not the answer.

Section IArgument analysis

“A policy is not humane because it is kind in intention. It is humane if, once every consequence has been counted, fewer people are worse off than before. Intentions are cheap; ledgers are not.”

The author would most likely agree that:

  • A.Kind intentions are irrelevant to whether a policy should be adopted.
  • B.A policy's humanity is judged by its net outcomes rather than its motives.
  • C.All policies produce more harm than their designers anticipate.
  • D.Economic accounting should replace ethical reasoning in policy.

Answer: B

Reasoning trap: Scope creep — promoting a measured claim into an absolute one.

The passage subordinates intention to outcome; it never declares intention irrelevant, which is why A overshoots. C invents an empirical claim about all policies. D reads the ledger metaphor literally. B restates exactly the relation the author asserts, no wider and no narrower.

Section IPoetry and tone

“We kept the light on for you / for eleven winters, / and paid for it, / and would pay again, / and never said so.”

The final line most contributes to the poem by:

  • A.Revealing that the waiting was resented.
  • B.Showing the cost was financial rather than emotional.
  • C.Making the devotion unspoken, and therefore unclaimed.
  • D.Suggesting the addressee never returned.

Answer: C

Reasoning trap: Evidence substitution — importing a feeling the text does not supply.

“Never said so” withholds the announcement of sacrifice, which is the poem's turn: the devotion is real and deliberately unclaimed. A reads resentment into a line that expresses restraint. B ignores “eleven winters” and the willingness to pay again. D is possible but not carried by that line specifically.

Section IData and graph interpretation

A survey reports that in towns with a new rail link, average commute satisfaction rose 14 points, while car ownership per household fell 6%. The survey sampled only households within 2 km of a station.

Which conclusion is best supported?

  • A.Rail links cause households to give up cars.
  • B.Commute satisfaction improves for all residents of these towns.
  • C.Among households sampled, higher satisfaction coincided with lower car ownership.
  • D.Car ownership will keep falling as more rail links open.

Answer: C

Reasoning trap: Population overreach — generalising from a restricted sample.

The sample is limited to households within 2 km of a station, so B cannot be supported for the whole town. A asserts causation from an association. D extrapolates a trend the data do not contain. C states only the co-occurrence the study can actually evidence.

Section IITask A planning

“Progress is measured by what a society refuses to tolerate.”

Which plan produces the strongest 30-minute essay?

  • A.Agree, then list five historical reforms in chronological order.
  • B.Define tolerance, argue refusal is a lagging indicator, test it against one reform and one failure.
  • C.Disagree on the grounds that progress cannot be measured at all.
  • D.Summarise the quote, then discuss personal experience of unfairness.

Answer: B

Reasoning trap: Illustration mistaken for argument.

Markers reward a controlled idea developed and tested, not enumerated. A produces a list with no thesis. C evades the prompt rather than engaging it. D substitutes anecdote for reasoning. B commits to a specific, arguable position and deliberately stress-tests it, which is what “thought and content” rewards.

Section IIIChemistry — equilibrium

For the exothermic reaction N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g), a sealed vessel at equilibrium is heated at constant volume.

The effect on the equilibrium is that:

  • A.The yield of NH₃ increases and K increases.
  • B.The yield of NH₃ decreases and K decreases.
  • C.The yield of NH₃ decreases while K is unchanged.
  • D.Neither the yield nor K changes, since volume is constant.

Answer: B

Reasoning trap: Treating K as fixed when temperature is the variable changed.

Heating an exothermic reaction shifts the position of equilibrium toward reactants, lowering NH₃ yield. Temperature is the one variable that changes K itself, so C is the standard misconception. A reverses the direction of the shift. D ignores that the disturbance is thermal, not volumetric.

Section IIIBiology — experimental design

Mice lacking receptor X gain less weight on a high-fat diet than wild-type mice. Food intake is identical between groups; oxygen consumption is 20% higher in the knockouts.

The most supported interpretation is that receptor X:

  • A.Suppresses appetite in wild-type mice.
  • B.Normally restrains energy expenditure.
  • C.Is required for fat absorption in the gut.
  • D.Causes obesity independently of diet.

Answer: B

Reasoning trap: Ignoring a stated control — intake is explicitly matched.

Identical food intake rules out an appetite mechanism, eliminating A. Raised oxygen consumption in the knockouts points to greater energy expenditure when the receptor is absent, so the receptor normally restrains it. C is untested by anything in the stimulus. D contradicts the diet-dependent design.

Section IIIPhysics — graph reasoning

A ball is thrown vertically upward. Air resistance is not negligible. Consider the magnitude of its acceleration during flight.

The acceleration is:

  • A.Constant at g throughout the flight.
  • B.Greater on the way up than on the way down.
  • C.Greater on the way down than on the way up.
  • D.Zero at the highest point.

Answer: B

Reasoning trap: Applying the idealised case after the stem removes the idealisation.

Going up, drag acts downward with gravity, so the magnitude exceeds g. Coming down, drag opposes gravity, so it is less than g. A is the frictionless answer the stem explicitly excludes. D confuses zero velocity with zero acceleration — at the apex gravity still acts.

How to use sample questions properly

Answer under timing — roughly 100 seconds for a Section I item and 120 seconds for Section III — then review before checking the next question. Write down which reasoning step failed rather than which letter was right. Over a few weeks those notes cluster into three or four repeated faults, and drilling those faults is what moves a score.
